genetic study uncovers secrets of beluga whale mating systems
In January, 2026, we published the first detailed genetic study on beluga whale mating systems in Frontiers in Marine Science. This was a big lift, spanning 13 years, hundreds of samples, and long hours in the lab and at the computer. But it was worth it. Beluga whales, at least in Bristol Bay, Alaska where the research was conducted, have what is called a polygynandrous mating system where both males and females have multiple partners over a long reproductive life. Such a system may be key to lowering inbreeding and maintaining genetic diversity, even in small populations.
The project was a joint effort between FAU-Harbor Branch, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the Bristol Bay Native Association Marine Mammal Council and the Alaska Beluga Whale Committee and showcases what can be achieved through community-based science Quyana to all!
